The Fenwick Treasure was found in Colchester (Roman Camulodunum) in 2014 by archaeologists excavating the site of Fenwick’s department store. This hoard of gold and silver jewellery and Roman coins was under the floor of a house which had been destroyed by fire. The dating and the absence of any bodily remains suggest that the jewellery and coins were deliberately buried around the time of the Boudican revolt. Among the items are gold earrings, a gold bracelet, and five gold rings. The earrings are hollow gold balls, similar to some which have been found in Pompeii. There is also a silver armilla, an award which was given to a retired soldier.
Every auxiliary soldier received a military diploma granting him citizenship upon completing twenty-five years of service in the Roman army. This diploma belonged to a soldier named Dasmenus Azalus, who was discharged in span class=smallcaps>ad 149. It is made of bronze and measures about 13 cm x 10 cm.
