Vespasian was a novus homo and the first emperor to come from an equestrian family. His grandfather was a centurion, his father a tax collector in the province of Asia, then a moneylender.

Emperors after Augustus took his names (Augustus Caesar) and the title imperator (general).

Caesar was one of the names of Emperor Augustus and became one of the titles of the Roman emperors.
