About the course

I’m in the UK - does Suburani prepare students for the OCR or Eduqas GCSEs?

Yes, you can use the course to prepare students for either board at GCSE. Suburani is the first reading course to be developed since the 2016 Eduqas and OCR GCSE specifications were released. As a result, we have been able to design the course to target precisely the language requirements of the latest specifications.

All Eduqas and OCR defined vocabulary are included in the Suburani Vocabulary for Learning. All Eduqas language content is met by the end of Chapter 26, and all OCR language is covered by the end of Chapter 32.

For more information, watch this video on preparing students for GCSE using Suburani, and have a look at the Curriculum Maps.

I’m in the US - what levels does Suburani cover?

In general terms, Book 1 covers Latin I, and Book 2 covers Latin II. Many teachers tell us they use part of Book 2 at the beginning of their Latin III courses.

Book 3 of Suburani is a thematic transitional reader, suitable for use in Latin III-IV classes.

Why aren’t there more black people in the illustrations?

While we wanted to include a diverse group of people in the stories and illustrations, evidence of people of Sub-Saharan African descent in Rome and the other locations of the stories during this historical period is more rare. The mix of ethnicities depicted in the illustrations is intended to be an accurate representation of our current understanding of the makeup of the population in the 1st century.

What language and culture topics are covered in each chapter?

A full overview of the language, culture, history and mythology topics for each chapter of Book 1 and Book 2 can be found in the Curriculum Maps area.

How was Suburani devised and trialled?

The Suburani team are very experienced course writers and developers, and we felt there was space for a fresh approach. The course was researched and written over a period of four years, and trialled in 40 schools (20 in the US, 20 in the UK) before publication. Feedback from teachers and students was instrumental in shaping the course, and it will continue to be so as we develop further resources.

Can you put me in touch with a local school using Suburani?

We don't share details of schools using the course. However, there is a Facebook group (Suburani teachers - worldwide) where you can put your questions to fellow teachers.

About Book 3

What is Book 3?

Book 3 provides a gradual introduction to unadapted Latin literature, together with cultural topics and further language notes. More information is available on our Book 3 page.

Is Book 3 now available?

Yes. The North American edition of Book 3 was released in June 2024, and the UK edition in June 2025. More information is available on our Book 3 page.

Can I see a chapter of Book 3?

Yes, a PDF of the first chapter (Chapter 33 - amor) is available on our Book 3 page, together with a passage-by-passage vocabulary list.

How can I see an overview of the Book 3 content?

A detailed list of the literature, language, and culture topics of Book 3 is available on our Book 3 page.

Is Book 3 available digitally?

Yes. Activebooks (i.e. digital versions) of each chapter of Book 3 are provided alongside those for Books 1 and 2 on our website, as part of a Suburani digital subscription. There is no additional charge - anyone with a subscription for Books 1 and 2 is also provided with the Book 3 content. Teaching resources are also provided for schools via the website.

Digital subscriptions

What’s the difference between an individual and a school subscription?

Individual accounts are designed for learners (i.e. students of any age) learning on their own. Individual accounts give access to the digital edition of the textbook, and to the interactive resources. However, they do not give access to the teacher resources (such as additional worksheets and answer sheets).

A school subscription gives teachers access to all of our Suburani online resources (including additional worksheets, answer sheets, and so on). These accounts are only available to schools, and must be ordered by a member of staff of the school via an email address that we may check against the school's website.

What’s the difference between a teacher and a student account?

In terms of ordering accounts, there's no difference: add up the number of students and teachers who need access, and order that number of accounts. For example, if you had 50 students and 2 teachers, you'd need 52 accounts. We'd assign 52 accounts to your school, and you'd then assign some accounts to students, and some to teachers.

In terms of access to resources, students can access everything that teachers can, except the two 'Teacher resources' sections, i.e. 'Teacher resources (Hands Up)' and 'Teacher resources (Community)'.

When and how do I renew my school’s accounts?

You can renew your accounts whenever you like. However, most schools aren't sure how many students will need access until September, so between early August and 15th October each year, we allow schools to go beyond their total number of accounts (i.e. schools can assign more accounts than they have purchased). Once you've added your new students, and deleted those who no longer need access, then you can order your accounts. Please make sure you do this by 15th October.

Please be aware that, because we allow schools to delete user accounts whenever they wish, we cannot refund schools for unused accounts, nor roll unused accounts over to the next year. Please therefore only order the number of accounts you need. It's easy to order more later if you find you don't have enough.

To order, you can fill in our order form, send us an email, send us a purchase order, or buy online - whatever suits you and your school. All the options are here for North American Schools and here for schools in the UK and rest of the world.

What if a student leaves, or I need to add students?

You can delete accounts whenever you like, and assign them to other students. The User Management 'How To' guide shows teachers how to add, delete, or move students.

If you have run out of accounts and need to purchase more, you can do so at any time. To order, you can fill in our order form, send us an email, send us a purchase order, or buy online - whatever suits you and your school. All the options are here for North American Schools and here for schools in the UK and rest of the world. Just let us know that you want to add new accounts, rather than renew existing accounts.

Please be aware that, because we allow schools to delete user accounts whenever they wish, we cannot refund schools for unused accounts, nor roll unused accounts over to the next year.

Can a student switch classes or schools?

Yes. The User Management 'How To' guide shows teachers how to move students between classes in the same school.

If you need to move students from one school to another (for example, from a middle school to a high school), just let us know - we can do that for you.

Using the digital resources

Can I see when my students have completed activities?

Yes. Log in to the website, and click the 'Manage' button (top right). Under the heading 'Student Progress', click the relevant activity type. Select the class, and you will then see each student's score for each activity.

Can I export student performance data?

Yes. Log in to the website, and click the 'Manage' button (top right). Under the heading 'Student Progress', click the relevant activity type. Select the class, and you will then see each student's score for each activity. You can download the results as a csv file by clicking the 'Download Results' button at the top of the page.

Can I disable the clickable translations and parsing in the story explorers?

Yes. Log in to the website, and click the 'Manage' button (top right). Under the heading 'Activity Control', click 'Word help in Activebook stories'. Untick/uncheck the box next to the relevant class and click 'Save Changes'. This will immediately disable the word level support for students in that class. (This function works at class level, rather than at student level. If you wish to give only some students in the class access to word help, create a separate 'class' for those students and adjust its settings accordingly.)

A student is having problems logging in. What can I do?

If a student enters an incorrect password a few times in a row, the software will assume there may be an unauthorised attempt to access the account, and will lock the account for a short time to secure it. We suggest the following: (i) leave the account for 24 hours, and try again; (ii) encourage the student to tick/check the 'Show password' box when signing in, to reduce the chance of error; (iii) have the student log into the account in front of you, so you can check s/he is entering the correct details.

To check the account, you may wish to try logging into it yourself as follows: look up the student's username, generate a new temporary password for the account, and then sign in with those details. (You may wish to use a different browser, so that you don't need to sign out of your own account while doing so.) Remember to log out and give the student the new password.

Orders and pricing

For current prices, please choose 'Order' (from the top menu above) and select the relevant option.

How do I order a free copy?

We are happy to provide each school with one free copy of Book 1 (free copies of Books 2 and 3 are not provided). Just head to the Free Copy page.

How can I pay for my order?

Individual customers may order and pay online.

Schools and institutions may order online, and either pay online or ask for their school to be invoiced, or they may submit an order form.

For more details, and to order, please choose 'Order' (from the top menu above) and select the relevant option.

Can I buy Suburani through my local bookseller?

Yes, you can. However, as we don't give booksellers a reduction in the price, they may need to charge you more. (Major booksellers typically ask us for 30%-40% reduction. As much as we love bookstores, we are a non-profit organization established to support Latin in schools, and we would prefer income from the course to go to schools.)
