Build it challenge

Professor Matthew Nicholls recently presented a fascinating webinar for us. There’s a link to it lower down the page. This inspired so much interest that we set up the Suburani BUILD IT challenge, open to both students and teachers. It was your chance to have a go at building your own 3D model.

There were four categories:

The task

  1. Choose one building or monument from the Suburani series, from Rome or any other location that the characters go.
  2. Research how it would have looked at the time of our stories.
  3. Build it in 3D, either as a digital or physical model, using any medium you choose.

Winners and prizes

Professor Nicholls has very kindly judged all the submissions. Here are the winners in each category. Press the full-screen icon dashed square icon in the image below to view them in all their glory.

Here is the full panoply of wonderful and inventive submissions.

Inspiration

If you haven’t already, you can watch Professor Matthew Nicholl’s webinar, where he talks about his large digital model of ancient Rome, and how he built it. You can also find QR codes to some of his models in the session PDF.

Professor Matthew Nicholls has made a large digital model of ancient Rome. This work has found many uses, from a free online course about the ancient city to use in museum displays and the movie Gladiator II. In this talk he will introduce the model and then use it to discuss the architecture and built environment of the ancient city, including the Suburra. There will be an opportunity to explore part of the area for yourself.
